Quick Name - Use the SoundLog Pro™ Naming scheme

Quickly create a new record for a new Sound File, complete with sound file name, description, category, and the correct path.

Follow this guide to name a file in Pro Tools®, using SoundLog Pro™. (This looks a lot longer & more difficult than it actually is. Do the steps below, and observe the results. After creating a few names, you'll see it is actually VERY quick to do, and is an excellent way to manage your library on an ongoing basis

Open a Pro Tools® session. then...

For this example we'll create a new stereo sound file using the "Duplicate" Audiosuite plug-in.

In your open session, set up a file like the one at right.

In SoundLog Pro™, go to the "Preferences" page.

These settings only need to be set up once per session. Find these on the "Preferences" page, under the "Import" tab.

Make sure the "Audio Files" folder is your current sessions audio files folder. Click the box to change the folder.

On the "preferences" page, go to the "General" tab.

  1. Set up the Creator (your name) Show, and Reel.
  2. Set your "Sound File Counter" to 1
  3. Set the Creator Initials to your initials.
  4. Set the "Name Stop" to a comma.
  5. Set the "Name Space" to space.
  6. Select "Use SoundLog Pro™ naming scheme".

This creates a new blank record, and puts you in the description field. (See next step)

Type in the text at right. (This is just for demonstration purposes, so no matter what your sound actually is, use this description EXACTLY - INCLUDING THE COMMA)

In our example, we're naming a Stereo file, so hit the button with 2 waveforms (the greenish one.)

The name will then be automatically created for you.

(Since the new sound is stereo, we hit the button with 2 waveforms, if it had been mono, then we'd hit the button with 1 waveform.)

Upon hitting the naming button, SoundLog Pro™ will create a name, copy that name to the Mac's clipboard, and bring Pro Tools® to the front.

We're now ready to make our new file. (See next step)

Hit "Process", on the "Duplicate" plug-in to make a new file.

Since the new name is in the Mac's clipboard, all that's left to do is double click the new sound files & paste the name in.

Note:

Stereo file names are made without the suffix (.L/.R), so the suffixes will need to be added manually.

Tip: I use a Quickey shortcuts to hit <command V>, then type in the suffixes.

Now name the right side of the file.

And you're done!

Note the new name, and how it was created:

  • The category is created and put at the front (this keeps similar files together in your region bin, and makes files easy to manage in the Finder as well)
  • Name creation stopped at the comma.
  • Your initials were added.
  • The sound file counter number was added (which automatically increments by 1 each time you name a file, so the next file will have "DF2" etc.. This prevents you from ever creating duplicate file names, since the counter will be the next higher number for each new file.)

Note that in SoundLog Pro™, the following has been created & entered:

  • Sound File Name
  • Online indicator
  • Category
  • Disk
  • Date
  • Creator, Show, & Reel
  • The Online Path now points to the file, so it is immediately accessable by SoundLog Pro™!
