Saving your work

– Most SoundLog Solutions™ products (Serial Number Saver™, uNeek!™, SoundLog Pro™, etc.) save as you work, so there's no need for a "save" command.
– This is a huge advantage, however due to the nature of "save as you work", whenever a document gets closed improperly, it gets checked for consistency, the next time it is opened. If there is some serious problem, you'll be prompted to Recover the document (see below for info on recovering a database).

Recovering a Damaged database

- If a serious error has occurred in a document/database, you may be prompted to "Recover" it.

Follow these steps to recover your document:

1) Double click the application SLEX while holding down <Command Option> on a Mac, or <Control Shift> in Windows. Continue holding down the keys until you see the "recover" dialog box.
2) At the prompt, select the document/database to be recovered.
3) A new database/document will be created, using the data in the damaged one. (The damaged document/database will be renamed with "old" at the end, and the new recovered document will retain the original name.)
** The type of damage that requires a "Recover", is extremely rare, and is usually the result of a crash, while the document/database is in the process of writing to a field. (Example: Your computer crashes, or you do a force-quit of the database, while it's performing a "Delete Duplicates" task, can possibly damage the database enough to require a "recover".)

About SLEX (SoundLog Engine for OS9)
- Even though you may own more than one SoundLog Solutions™ product, only 1 copy of SLEX is needed (per platform, of course).
- The same copy of SLEX can open & run multiple SoundLog Solutions™ products at once.
- For this reason, there is no application named "uNeek!™", or "Serial Number Saver™". Look for SLEX or SoundLog Engine (for OS9), as that's the application being used to drive your software.

SLEX can't find the right document

- If the application SLEX is double clicked, you may get an an error message like:

DO NOT BE ALARMED!! Contrary to what the warning says, this file is not needed. As described above in the "About SLEX", this is the unfortunate artifact of distributing a single SLEX, which is usable for several different types of solution documents. The document "SLP - David Farmer Clone", was simply the document SLEX was originally created for. It is NOT needed, and this does not affect how your product functions.

Solution :
• Double Click the document you wish to open, instead of SLEX. (If you own "Filemaker Pro", and it opens instead of SLEX, see instructions on this help page for that.)
- or -
• Drag the document you wish to open onto SLEX.

(*** This might be a bit confusing at first, since with most software you would open the application. Think of SLEX as "Filemaker" (the application), and the various products as "Filemaker" documents.)

Filemaker opens instead of SLEX
- For some users, when double clicking the document, Filemaker may open, instead of SLEX. This is typically due to your Mac's desktop file not being updated correctly (which is usually an automatic process).

The "File Type" of the document is the same for both Filemaker documents & SLEX documents, but the "Creator Type" is different. If the Mac's desktop file is updated correctly, it will look for an application of the same creator type as the document to open it. Under normal circumstances, this is done automatically. Ocassionally, other steps are needed.

OSX
1) In the Finder, select the document (Example Serial Number Saver, or SoundLog Pro), and then select Get Info from the File menu.
2) You will see an information window like the one below. If you don't see a pull-down menu with application choices like in the image below, click the little triangle to the left where it says, Open With.
3) Select SLEX, then close the information window.
4) That's it!

OS9

1) Drag the document you wish to open onto SLEX, then quit SLEX, repeat this a few times, then restart the computer.
2) If #1 doesn't fix the problem, then it may be time to rebuild the desktop. See your "Mac Help" for instructions on how to do this.

Features are missing in the menus

- On some products, some features may be grayed out. This is intentional, but may be distracting at first. Apologies, but there are good reasons for this approach.

Current products are all created with "Filemaker Pro", Developers edition, which basically allows creation & distribution of solutions & run-time engines. This means the user need not purchase Filemaker to run the software.

• On some solutions/products, many functions may not be available as a menu item, but needed/desired functions have been included as scripts, and/or buttons. Check under the SLEX "Script" menu, once you've launched the product.
Example: Serial Number Saver, has MANY menu items unavailable, but these are all for security reasons to protect your serial numbers & sensitive data. All necessary functions have been included in the script menu, or as buttons.

WHY NOT THEN, COMPLETELY REMOVE THE ITEMS FROM THE MENUS?
As mentioned in the "About SLEX", this method allows multiple software solutions to run, using the same application engine (in this case, SLEX). The "menu items", are specific to the application "SLEX", but their availability, depends on the product/solution. A menu item that is grayed out in one product, might be needed by another, so the menu item is left intact.
Example: Serial Number Saver, and SoundLog Pro, BOTH use the same copy of SLEX, but each product accesses different tasks from it.

Why can't I change the database with my copy of Filemaker?

• While products are created with Filemaker Pro, the layouts, scripts, etc., are non-editable by the end user.
• Products are intended to provide a service to users, who don't have the tools, or time, to create their own solutions.

- All products are designed to work as self-contained, complete solutions. (Any suggestions for features, in future releases, are welcomed at info@soundlog.com.)
- Even solutions, such as Serial Number Saver, that are seemingly simple, have
a number of hidden functions. Change (even accidental) of any of these functions, can easily & quickly lead to a product that doesn't work properly.

Error - "Filemaker couldn't be launched because of incorrect installation, missing system components or insufficient memory, please see the Filemaker instructions....."

- When both the OSX & OS9 applications "SoundLog Engine" are present on the same computer, and the user is trying to open the OS9 document in OS9, the Mac desktop may see the OSX SoundLog Engine as the "latest" version, and tries unsuccessfully to open that one. The result is an ugly error, which should read more like "This OSX application can't be opened in the Classic environment." But that's the error Filemaker gives us, at least for now.

Solution :
1) Drag the SNS document (Serial Number Saver 1.0.3 etc.) onto the OS9 version of SoundLog Engine.
- or -
2) Take the OSX SLEX off your system. (Not a viable alternative if you intend to use the OSX version of SNS.)
